About the Event
For this year's Book Week Scotland, join the team at STEM Ambassadors Scotland as they read from Curiosity the Story of a Mars Rover.
Meet Mason Robbins astronaut candidate and Education Officer at saxoford Spaceport to find out about how rockets work and why they are useful and learn how to make your own straw rockets.
During the session we will:
- Read a section from Curiosity The Story of a Mars Rover (10 -15 mins)
- Hear from Mason about working in a Spaceport and how and why we use rockets (10 - 15 mins)
- Show you how to make your own straw rockets
You may wish to make your own rockets during or after the session, for this you will need
Each child will need:
● A straw (can be any straw)
● To print the Rockets Template or have a piece of paper to draw their own designs (these will be sent prior to the event)
● Colouring pens / pencils
● Sellotape
● Scissors
You could have one Rockets template between two children to save paper. It’s a good idea for the children to only colour a pattern not solid colour on their rocket, otherwise it takes too long and makes the paper floppy! You may want to have some sellotape cut in advance as it can take a long time to give sellotape strips out to everyone if they can not do this themselves yet. Also some children can be cutting their template while others colouring if you are sharing scissors and pens.
This session is aimed at learners in Primary 4-7
You should book one ticket per showing, e.g. one ticket per class/group.
The session will take place on Microsoft Teams Live, when you register you will be sent a link to join the session. On the day you will be able to share the screen so all the learners can see it. You'll also be able to ask questions via the Q&A function.
if you are unable to attend on the day you registration will give you access to a recording after the event.
