MATHS WEEK SCOTLAND 2023

Maths Week Scotland is an annual, week-long celebration of the importance of maths in our everyday lives. This year, Maths Week Scotland will run from 

25 September - 1 October 2023.

This year's theme is Maths in Motion - exploring how maths is involved in the movement of, well, everything!

 

We are working with our STEM Ambassadors and Maths Week Scotland to help you bring maths and numeracy to life in the classroom and to link to this year's theme.

For Primary school pupils

Starters for STEM 
(ages 4 – 11)

Starters for STEM consists of lots of easy to run activities suitable for children from 4-11. Designed for parents to use at home they help children develop their science, technology, engineering and maths skills. They are designed to be fun for children and easy to run for parents, who can chose to do as many as they wish.

Maths Ceilidh
(all ages)

Get your dancing shoes on and explore symmetry and data collection through ceilidh dance. These activities can be done with a whole class, small groups or objects on a tabletop.

Mission to the Moon 
(ages 5 – 11)

This collection of practical activities, investigations and games is all based on current lunar research. It supports many aspects of working scientifically and links to area of the curriculum including: earth and space, light and shadows, forces, materials, changes of state and rocks and soils. Activities are provided for children of different ages and have clear curricular and career links and opportunities developing problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. 

Maths Outdoors
(primary)

A planning framework for your outdoor sessions including 25 outdoor maths games for everyone.

Counting Games
(ages 3 – 5)

A selection of games published by BEAM for teachers of early years mathematics. The games enable students to develop their skills of number recognition, counting, comparison and writing of numbers.

Space Debris
(ages 7 -11)

These inspirational resources introduce primary pupils to the concept of space debris and help raise their awareness of how important it is to clean up space.

For Secondary school pupils

How Fast is London
(ages 11 - 14)

Music Festival 
(ages 14 +)

This resource is part of a collection of Nuffield Maths resources explores Data Handling. The demand is roughly equivalent to that in Higher Level GCSE and Level 2 Functional Mathematics.

Safety Matters 
(ages 11 - 14)

In this activity, students are asked to analyse data to work out which form of personal transport is currently the least safe. They then consider what safety features are in use at the moment.

Faye Cashman: Spacecraft Engineer
(ages 11 +)

Faye Cashman is a Systems Engineer at Astrium in Portsmouth. In this video, Faye describes her work with all sorts of spacecraft systems such as communication satellites and the Mars Rover.

Saving the planet one journey at a time
(ages 11 - 14)

This maths-based challenge explores sustainable travel, developing student understanding of the effects that some modes of transport have on the environment and ways of reducing it.

We’re looking for STEM Ambassadors to add Offers to the STEM Learning website so that Educators and Group Leaders can browse them.  This is a great option if you have already developed a Maths focused activity or have an idea you would like to discuss.
