Solarpunk Island Innovation Project

Through STEM Ambassador funding from STEM Learning, SSERC worked in partnership with Daydream Believers to bring the Solarpunk Island Innovation Project to S3 pupils in Glasgow.

During the project, 23 pupils from St Andrew’s RC Secondary worked over five school terms from June 2025 to May 2026, using the Solarpunk Island resources to develop their STEM skills and to show how they will survive and thrive on their island.

The aim of the project was to change pupils’ perspective of engineering when they have a preference for biology as a subject. This would be done by highlighting examples of engineering in a biology setting through visiting workplaces, meeting STEM Ambassadors and completing engineering-focused challenges.

During this project pupils took part in a launch event which was supported by six STEM Ambassadors. They then worked as part of a tribe (or team) during lunchtime sessions over four terms to build their models and overcome curveball challenges presented by a further three STEM Ambassadors. The project ended with a Showcase Day at Glasgow Science Centre where five STEM Ambassadors supported the pupils to show off their their STEM skills.
