Tell us a fun fact about yourself

I love bridges and love challenges. I combined the two with an abseil off the forth rail bridge for charity in its 125 year anniversary year.

Tell us about your career journey so far

I left school at 16, and worked in administration and telesales then moved onto working in a semiconductor lab. I then undertook a Degree in computing and then joined a large roads project based in Cumbernauld. This was the start of my career within Civil Engineering. Lots of roads and bridges later, I work within the Stakeholder Engagement Team and recently completed an HNC in Civil Engineering!

What was your favourite subject in school and why?

I loved Secretarial Studies and Maths, then later enjoyed computing.

What subjects/qualifications are useful in your role?

I use a lot of different skills in my day to day role…English is important to be able to communicate, Civil Engineering is important to understand the works that the Engineers are doing, IT and computing is important, so that I can use all the various software packages and understand what goes wrong when they break ! Maths is used everywhere, many places that you may not have thought about. I use Maths almost every day to work out a lot of information eg. Statistics, time management, logic – you use it more than you think!

What is your favourite thing about your job?

Working with schools is something I've always enjoyed

What is a normal day in your role like?

I take phone calls/enquiries about project works, I put together information packs, I visit schools/colleges and I liaise with communities and anyone that may have an interest in what we are constructing. I work to support the delivery of community benefits, working together with local communities to help support them deliver their aims within their localities. I provide construction updates which is vital for people living, working and travelling through the areas where works are taking place.
