Maths in Motion: Maths Week Scotland 2023

Mathematics, often called the universal language, plays a pivotal role in our everyday lives, from the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed.


To celebrate the importance of maths and to inspire future mathematicians, Maths Week Scotland 2023 is hosting a series of exciting events and activities. This year's theme, "Maths in Motion," promises to bring maths to life in creative and engaging ways.


Here's just some of the events happening during this fantastic week that ambassadors can get involved with:


1. Maths in Motion at Kirkcolm Primary School


Date: September 25, 2023

Kicking off Maths Week Scotland 2023, Kirkcolm Primary School is inviting STEM Ambassadors to join them in bringing maths to life. This event is part of a collaboration involving three rural schools, Portpatrick Primary, Leswalt Primary and Kirkcolm Primary Schools. The schools aim to provide interactive maths-based activities to their primary students, focusing on the theme of the week. STEM Ambassadors can choose to participate in person or online, tailoring their activities to different age groups. The school has 23 students in P1-4 and 16 in P5-7, providing an excellent opportunity to make maths fun and engaging for young minds.


2. Maths in Motion at Langbank Primary School


Date: September 28, 2023

Langbank Primary School is putting the theme "Maths in Motion" into action with a deep dive into how maths connects to various aspects of life, including dance, time, sports, and traffic. STEM Ambassadors are welcome to speak at a whole school assembly or engage with different age groups for more focused presentations. With four classes, this event offers a dynamic opportunity to explore the many facets of maths and its applications.


3. Maths Week Scotland Careers Fair at Clyde Primary School


Date: September 28, 2023

Clyde Primary School is hosting a Careers Fair during Maths Week Scotland to introduce young students (aged 8 to 12) to the world of STEM careers. With a significant portion of their students residing in socially deprived areas, this event provides a unique chance for STEM Ambassadors to inspire and inform the next generation. Ambassadors will host stalls where students can ask questions about their jobs, the skills they use, and their career journeys. It's an opportunity to broaden horizons and encourage children to dream big.


4. Promoting Maths at St. Francis' Of Assisi Primary School


Date: September 26, 2023

St. Francis' Of Assisi Primary School is looking for a STEM Ambassador to promote the beauty of mathematics and how it applies in the real world. Any maths-related activity that enhances students' maths skills will be invaluable. It's a chance to show young learners that maths is more than just numbers; it's a key to unlocking exciting opportunities.


5. Why Choose Maths at Gracemount High School


Date: September 27, 2023

Gracemount High School invites STEM Ambassadors to share their passion for mathematics with a careers talk for S2 and S4 students. The aim is to inspire the highest performers in maths to pursue the subject further, whether it's aiming for NAT 5 or beyond in S4 or progressing to NAT 3, 4, and 5 in S2. The goal is to demonstrate that mathematics opens doors to exciting careers and to encourage students to aim high.


6. DYW Maths Week Scotland Live Talks - Online


Date: September 26, 2023

"Developing the Young Workforce" (DYW) is seeking STEM Ambassadors to participate in live talks during the week. In these 20-minute sessions, Ambassadors will discuss how they use maths in their careers, aligning with the theme of "Maths in Motion." Students will have the chance to ask questions during an interactive Q&A session.


7. S1, S2, S3 Maths Week Speaker at ST. Thomas of Aquin's R.C. High School


Date: September 27, 2023

St. Thomas of Aquin's R.C. High School is eager to provide their students with an inspiring message about the importance of maths and its real-world applications. They believe that hearing from a STEM Ambassador will help students understand the significance of pursuing maths and STEM subjects. This will be a talk for each year group in the assembly hall throughout the morning.
